Joseph Ave & Cohen's Kosher Restaurant

"Cohen's Kosher Restaurant"

"I have so many memories of Joseph Avenue that I recorded in my book, "The Future Begins With The Past." I vividly remember eating dinner at Cohen's restaurant on Sunday nights. The meal for me was always a Cohen's Special: rye bread with a generous helping of corn beef, lettuce, and tomato cut in quarters and served with either mayo or mustard. The quarters were arranged so potato chips fit in the middle with a dill pickle on the side. My drink was always a loganberry phosphate. Yum, Yum!"

"I remember fondly Cohen’s Kosher Restaurant on Joseph Ave. Their corn beef special sandwich was delicious. And Gottfried's Bakery near my grandmother’s house on Edward St. had the most delightful aroma from freshly baked rye bread. A treat to eat warm bread."

"A Window in Time"

"My grandparents, Joseph and Rose Springut, were founders of the synagogue Congregation B'nai Israel. Their names were on the window close to the podium. I received Hebrew lessons from Rabbi Solomon which resulted in a "bar mitzvah" ceremony in May 1955. We lived in a five-family house on Clifford and Maria Streets - a short walk to the shul (synagogue). My grandparents lived downstairs. Their son, Max, and his wife, Barb, and their two children, Jeff and Robin, lived upstairs. Also upstairs in their apartment was my Aunt Thelma with her husband and their two daughters, Shelly and Jackie, and their brother, Charles. Downstairs was my Aunt Ruth. In the other downstairs apartment were my mother, Margie, and husband, Mike, and my brother, Stewart.”
